ARRESTS OF CIVIL SOCIETY LEADERS A BLOW TO DEMOCRATIC GAINS OF THE SECOND LIBERATION

The violent force used and eventual arrests of civil society leaders-Cyprian Nyamwamu of NCEC, Mwalimu Mati formally of TI, columnist Okoiti Omtatah and others by the police should be highly condemned. It’s a reminder of the old dreaded KANU days. Its an indicator that there are major forces which are out to make sure that bad laws are passed in parliament without public resentment. It’s so unfortunate that even under the current democracy such actions by the police have not changed. As it’s alleged that they were holding a demonstration against the immoral attempts by the ninth parliament to give itself billions of money at the expense of the tax payer should be commended. Any right thinking Kenyan knows that it’s an act of massive corruption if the parliamentarians award themselves such monies as highlighted by the media. It is an opportunity for young people to stand and be counted in the fight against such rip off. This and the attempts by the government to gerrymander 40 constituencies should be condemned too. The third national youth convention which is scheduled to be held soon should address such kind of issues. The youth must wake up for if these mistakes are not corrected now; it’s them who will in future bear the brunt of such horrendous evils being committed by the greedy 9th parliament. Even if the police have express instructions to use unreasonable force against demonstrators, the Kenyan youth should not relent in their pursuit of justice and equality. Since the youth which is a vast voting group is also underrepresented in parliament, 100 positions of nominations should be reserved for the youth with 50%allocation to each gender. Hon Martha Karua talks for women in the cabinet, who is talking for the youth within the same precincts of power. The 50 proposed seats for women is blackmail to the president to approve it to get women votes. It’s important too that young people rise and bargain for stakes with anyone interested in the youth vote. The youth have not raised their voices enough to be heard. Now is the time. Young people need to wake up from slumber land and save this country from the incumbent insatiable leaders.Nyamwamu, Mwalimu mati and Omtatah have lead by example, and Kenya youths should emulate them, to make sure that the parliament stops pursuing corrupt and oppressive bills with impunity.
